THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST PART 7

SOVEREIGNTY OF JESUS CHRIST Part 7

From the previous article Part 6, we saw the practical demonstration of the sovereignty of the name of Jesus Christ over the Plant Kingdom. Please note that God is not a respecter of persons.

I once remember a family who reported to me that their three-bedroom flat and the compound was invested with scorpions. They have fumigated the house and the environment with various powerful insecticides and all sorts but there was no difference. I joined my faith with theirs, paid them a visit and addressed the scorpions to leave their house and the environment in the sovereign name of Jesus Christ. Lo and behold, that was the last time they saw any scorpion in that house and the compound.

And Peter opened his mouth and said: Most certainly and thoroughly I now perceive and understand that God shows no partiality and is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34 AMPC)

For God shows no partiality [undue favour or unfairness; with Him one man is not different from another]. (Romans 2:11 AMPC)

God will honour and regard the name of Jesus Christ in your mouth as long as you are His child and you firmly and resolutely believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour and you are living according to His principles and practices. You really don’t have to be a clergyman before you operate in this dimension we are talking about. God is no respecter of persons.

Dear reader, please appreciate the sovereignty of Jesus Christ over all thrones, kingdoms, dominions, names and titles. Armed with your faith in this revelation, you too as a firm believer can command creation: sand, water, leaves, trees, roots, fruits, seeds, animals, birds, reptiles, insects e.t.c. that the occult practitioners use in making charms and talisman not to work against you by neutralizing, deprogramming and rendering their elements useless by prophetic prayers using the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

Let us take a step further as we consider the sixth attribute as we consider the sovereignty of Jesus Christ.

6. Self-existence:

The theologians refer to this attribute as the Aseity of God.

Norman Leo Geisler (born July 21, 1932) is a Christian systematic theologian, philosopher, and apologist. He is the co-founder of two non-denominational Evangelical seminaries (Veritas Evangelical Seminary and Southern Evangelical Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Loyola University and is well known for his scholarly contributions to the subjects of classical Christian apologetics, systematic theology, the history of philosophy, philosophy of religion, the creationism and evolution debate, Calvinism, Roman Catholicism, biblical inerrancy, Bible difficulties, ethics, and more. He is the author, coauthor, or editor of over 90 books and hundreds of articles. (Wikipedia .org).

In his book, systematic Theology, he wrote that “Aseity’ comes from the Latin aseite, meaning literally “of oneself.” Used by God, it denotes that He exists in and of Himself, independent of anything else. He is self-existent… The biblical basis for God’s aseity is found in the facts that 1) He existed prior to and independent of creation and that 2) He brought into and sustains in existence everything else that is.”

(Norman Geisler, Systematic Theology (Bloomington, MN: Bethany House, 2003), 58.)

In his prototypical book Knowledge of the HolyA. W. Tozer writes:

Almighty God, just because He is almighty, needs no support. The picture of a nervous, ingratiating God fawning over men to win their favour is not a pleasant one; yet if we look at the popular conception of God, that is precisely what we see.

Twentieth Century Christianity has put God on charity. So lofty is our opinion of ourselves that we find it quite easy, not to say enjoyable, to believe that we are necessary to God. But the truth is that God is not greater for our being, nor would He be less if we did not exist. That we do exist is altogether of God's free determination, not by our desert nor by divine necessity.

This attribute of God is what makes God to exist on his own without the input of any other being. He does not need man or any other creature to keep him company or service him in any way before he could exist or be complete. He derives his life and existence all by himself and from himself. He is complete in himself. He is the uncreated creator.

J.I Parker, a prolific author, in his book Concise Theology, said, " God is self-existent, God has always been...Our Maker exists in an eternal, self-sustaining, necessary way, necessary, that is, in the sense that God does not have it in Him to go out of existence, just as we do not have it in us to live forever. We necessarily age and die, because it is our present nature to do that; God necessarily continues forever unchanged, because it is His eternal nature to do that. This is one of many contrasts between creature and Creator...God's self-existence is the basic truth. At the outset of his presentation of the unknown God to the Athenian idolaters, Paul explained that this God, the world's Creator, "is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else" (Acts 17:23-25). Sacrifices offered to idols, in today's tribal religions as in ancient Athens, are thought of as somehow keeping the god going, but the Creator (the I AM) needs no such support system. The word aseity, meaning that he has life in himself and draws his unending energy from Himself (a se in Latin means "from himself”), was coined by theologians to express this truth, which the Bible makes clear."

( Packer, J. I., Concise Theology. Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House, 2001, pg. 26-7 )

When God appeared to Moses at Horeb to commission him as a deliverer of the children of Israel from the captivity of Egypt, Moses asked God, what answer will he give the elders of Israel when he is asked, “who sent you to us and what is his name?”  Here, God revealed his self-existence nature that does not change or go into extinction, He said, “tell them I AM has sent you”.

And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.  (Ex.3:13-15 KJV)

Dr Spiros Zodhiates (March 13, 1922- October 10, 2009) was a Greek-American Bible scholar, author, and ministry innovator. In his book, The Complete Word Study Old Testament,  he gave us a brief word meaning of "I AM" - It means to exist or to be"

By nature, all creatures age and die. The reverse is the case with God. It is in His nature to be ageless, unchanging, self-existing and to live forever!

Now, please follow me closely, Jesus Christ, being one with God is also self- existing. He declared this in the St John's gospel, chapter 5.

For even as the Father has life in Himself and is self-existent, so He has given to the Son to have life in Himself and be self-existent. And He has given Him authority and granted Him power to execute (exercise, practice) judgment because He is [a]a Son of man [very man]. (Jn.5:26-27 AMPC)

Jesus however forewarned those who deny his divinity and Aseity. The warning was reemphasized twice in a single verse of the scripture to convey its utmost gravity.

This is why I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not trust that I AM [who I say I am], you will die in your sins.” (John8:24 Complete Jewish Bible CJB)

Here, Jesus was giving a strict warning. To die in your sins is to be denied a mediator, an advocate and atonement. This is tantamount to eternal damnation. Right from the Garden of Eden, we understand that it is sin that brings hardship, toiling, hard labour,  misery, sorrow, death and total separation from divinity.

St. Mathew's gospel Chapter 1 verse 21 says Jesus came to save us from our sins. For him to save us from our sins, it must be that he has a nature different from ours and superior to humanity in general. If we, therefore, deny him of that nature, which is his deity, his Aseity, we will also lose the benefits of what that nature manifested in him could offer us which is life eternal.

As I round up on this insightful discuss, let me consider the seventh attribute about the sovereignty of Jesus Christ.

 7.  Infinite:

To say that God is infinite means he is not finite. He is transcendent, exceedingly great and far above all creation. He is limitless, timeless, ageless, inconceivable, immeasurable, extensive and excellent in greatness.

Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. (Ps.147:5 KJV)

Pastor E. A Adeboye, a spiritual father of fathers and a highly referred patriarch of the faith in Nigeria, the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God often worships God with this understanding of his infinite attribute. Often times, he says, God is Greater than the greatest, Mightier than the mightiest, Stronger than the strongest, Wiser than the wisest......... e.t.c.

Great is the Lord and highly to be praised; and His greatness is [so vast and deep as to be] unsearchable. (Ps.145:3 AMPC)

There is no searching of his understanding. He knows everything about everything! His intellectual capacity encompasses all that exists to be known either in the past or present or in the future. He is the God who is, who was and is to come. Hallelujah!!!!

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord God, He Who is and Who was and Who is to come, the Almighty (the Ruler of all). (Rev.1:8 AMPC)

It is because our human mind cannot comprehend the infinitude of God and his awesome attributes, that is why Jesus had to step out of infinite glory to reveal God to us. He was not lesser than God in any way but he humbled himself to be completely human while on earth.

Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:] Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [[a]possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not [b]think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped [c]or retained, But stripped Himself [of all privileges and [d]rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross! Therefore [because He stooped so low] God has highly exalted Him and has [e]freely bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, ( Philippians 2:5-9 AMPC)

However, after the work of redemption of humanity was concluded and the fullness of the glory he had with the Father before the world began was restored after the resurrection, Jesus became infinitude

When the Son of Man comes in His glory (His majesty and splendour), and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them [the people] from one another as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats; (Matt.25:31-32 AMPC)
